Synopsis
In Italian with English subtitles
Please join us for another unique, outstanding film that could only come from Italy.
This is Micaela Ramazzotti’s tour de force. An actress with 27 wins and 23 nominations in international awards, the Italian Film Series first introduced her in the movie La Pazza Gioia (Like Crazy) in July 2017.
Set in Rome between 1938 and 1943, the movie traces the extraordinary story of Elena DiPorto, a strong, independent, and courageous Roman Jewish woman, a rebel of the times. She is a mother of two children, separated from her husband, who wears trousers, smokes, drinks, and plays billiards. To be different takes courage: you risk being marginalized and punished. She gets arrested multiple times for getting into fights and challenging the fascist regime that dominate her neighborhood, and for this reason, in the Jewish ghetto of Rome, they call her “Elena the Crazy.”
Rebels are the first to realize when something limits freedom, and they react, even alone. Courage is sometime mistaken for insanity, and rebellion for recklessness. But the courage of the heart can never be silenced, even when sometimes it’s too late. Elena embodies these characteristics.
This is the story about Elena, shunned by her own even when telling the truth about the German betrayal of the Jewish population. She is like a Cassandra warning about the fall of Troy.
